Today, as you read this, what is your mind ruminating on? What is keeping you up at night? What is causing you stress? This thought is likely replaying in your head over and over again like a broken record. Surely we all want this unhealthy loop of thought to stop, but we think everything needs to be solved first, right? Wrong.
The brain is absolutely the command center of your body but not everything we think is true. Often, the brain will magnify some of our thoughts with a “you have to fix this now” sense of urgency. If you are up at night or stressed, then you have given your mind the reigns and you have likely tried to fix it with more ruminations. How’s that working out for you? Not so good, huh? I get it.
Let’s try this, let’s put the reigns back in your hands. Every time you have one of those thoughts, I want you to say, “Here we go again!” Now decide who is in charge, you or your runaway thought. Pick you, please! Now decide on one action step you will take to improve this in some way, regardless of how small. The reason your mind is magnifying this thought is because it’s afraid you’re ignoring it’s warnings. One baby step tells the mind, “OK, she’s working on it, phew!”
With Gratitude,
Beth
P.S. If you need a visual, I think our minds see us like we see our teenagers—”Is she even listening?”
