How many of you enjoy conflict? Do you like verbalizing your thoughts that are not in alignment with your boss, your spouse, or even your friends? I doubt many of you are saying, “I love conflict!” The truth is that most people want to be liked. It’s one of the fundamental tenets of human behavior and results in many of us avoiding conflict at all cost. We prefer to be a team player so we will be known as a great person to work with or be around.
The truth is—conflict can be good—if handled correctly. Conflict means there is a disagreement, but if you never verbalize your thoughts, there is a domino effect of negative results beginning with anger and resentment. Conflict is good when it comes in the form of constructive conflict.
There are many ways to bring constructive conflict into any relationship but step #1 will always be a quote by Don Corleone from The Godfather: “it’s not personal, it’s business.” Constructive conflict is grounded in respect. There has to be a safe space that encourages challenging the status quo. Whether it’s at work or at home, constructive conflict is good for everyone, but it’s in the nuances that it becomes a game-changer. Here’s to mastering the nuances—especially if we aren’t afraid of conflict!
With Gratitude,
Beth
