Where Do You Want To Be?

Some of the questions I ask my clients are, “Where do you want to be in 1 year? 3 years? 5 years?” The “opposite” of that question, which is the one I asked myself and the one that got me into coaching in the first place is, “Where were you 1 year ago? 3 years? 5 years?” When I asked that of myself, about 7 years ago, my answer floored me—I didn’t really have a lot of progression to show for about 5 years.

With the world at a standstill, I can’t think of a better time then now for all of us to ask: Where were we? And Where do we want to be? Life has a super sneaky way of passing us by without us truly noticing. I have a slight variation on a really great quote that fits beautifully here: Failure to plan (and take action) is planning to fail (because we didn’t act). There is no better day than today to ask yourself, “Where do I want to be at year’s end or one year from now?” It has to be different than where you are now, right? Dream a little. Give it your best thought.

Now it’s time to execute. Make a plan. Get a coach. Find an accountability partner. But whatever you do, do not leave this to chance. We’ve done that before, remember? It never works out so well. It’s a little bit like being adrift in the ocean in a small boat with no motor—the boat will definitely end up somewhere somehow, but probably not when and where we want. The choice is ours: do we want to drift or crank on the motor, and drive this boat to the port of our choosing? I can’t answer that question for you, but I know just thinking about that boat being tossed haphazardly about in the ocean, helplessly adrift, makes me sick to my stomach. Come on! Give it some thought. We got this!

With Gratitude,
Beth
