“Better to light a candle, then to curse the darkness.” ~Chinese Proverb

Think about the darkness in your life right now. I can only speak for myself when I say there is usually a little darkness in my life at all times. Darkness has come in various shapes and sizes—it’s all of the challenges that we currently face. Some of these challenges offer us no choice, we have to take them on, while others, well, we get to decide.

What is the darkness in your life that you have decided to curse? Is it your job or your career? Is it your weight or your health? Is it your financial situation? Or is it something else? Cursing the darkness only serves to affirm the darkness and it makes us a victim—and we don’t want that. Does lighting a candle seem impossible?

What does lighting a candle to this darkness even look light? Sometimes the candle is all about the solution, but other times, it’s simply about accepting the darkness and purposefully cultivating gratitude for all that is good in our lives. Darkness is ONE part of our life, not ALL of it. Look beyond the darkness. Light the candle. Sink into your most comfortable chair and take inventory of all that is good. You may just find, the darkness begins to feel a little less dark.
