Friday’s Quote

“We can make ourselves miserable or we can make ourselves strong. The amount of effort is the same.” Pema Chodron

I don’t believe most people will ever stop to consider the truth of Chodron’s quote. If she’s right and it does require an equal amount of effort to be miserable as it does to be strong, why would we ever choose miserable? Seriously, why? Wouldn’t we all choose strong?

Chodron has also concluded that, “Nothing ever goes away until it has taught us what we need to know.” I love this one and I share it with my clients often because I want to make sure we are not going to have to cross this bridge again. “One and done,” as they say. If you find yourself exasperatingly saying, “Not again?” then this quote is for you.

Finally, Chodron shares this profound visual: “You are the sky. Everything else is just the weather.” Will you ever look at the sky the same way again? I hope not. This morning, I am currently looking at a beautiful blue sky—that’s me and you—but a storm is coming later today and I will see it for what it is, just passing weather. The sky will remain the same, separate and distinct from the weather. That’s beautiful!
