I listened to a podcast where Adam Grant interviewed Emmanuel Acho about goals, or I should say Acho’s “anti-goal-setting” approach. Since I am a firm believer in goals, I had to hear Acho’s take. In the end, Acho’s approach is absolutely a version of goal setting with a slight nuance.
Acho aptly states that if we set a goal, like the famed 4-minute-mile, we are leaving anything better than a 4-minute-mile on the table. That goal limits us. The 4-minute-mile goal was ultimately shattered repeatedly and the new record stands at 3:43, 17 seconds under 4 minutes. Acho purports that, “an objective with no limitation,” is far better than a goal. I don’t disagree, but I do think it’s a little bit of splitting hairs.
So whether you set goals or set an objective with no limitation—set something! The reason I say Acho is splitting hairs is because most people don’t even set goals, let alone setting objectives with no limitations. Numerous studies have shown that only three percent of the population set goals and only about one percent actually write them down (which is the difference makers, btw.) As you head into 2023, please consider setting a goal (or an objective with no limitation)! Either way, we will be creating a game-changing plan! Grab a pen and some paper because 2023 is going to be epic!
Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
