Mr. Irrelevant

Years ago, if your memory serves you well, I wrote about ‘Mr. Irrelevant.’ Mr. Irrelevant is the player selected last in the NFL draft, which in 2022 was the 262nd pick. The “winner” of Mr. Irrelevant that year was Brock Purdy. He was selected by the San Francisco 49ers as their third string quarterback, behind Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. I’m sure it was expected that he would never see actual playing time, but fate has a weird way of rearing its head.

Not only did Lance get injured, but so did Garoppolo, putting Purdy in probably the single most important role on the 49ers—starting quarterback. He assumed the role in December as they were about to head into the playoffs. No pressure, right? He is currently one win away from playing in the NFL Super Bowl! What? That’s rather incredible for someone who was considered ‘Irrelevant’ just a few weeks back.

So, whatever negative beliefs or doubts you have about yourself, I want you to reconsider. I want you to absorb what I just shared with you today! He was marked as irrelevant until he was NOT! He is about the farthest thing from irrelevant right now—ask Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles. He’s so not irrelevant—and nothing has changed about Brock Purdy except that he was asked to step up and assume the position. That’s you and me, too! We must stop stepping away from our greatness. It’s there, it’s always been there, but maybe it hasn’t been tapped into recently. Let’s channel our inner Brock Purdy this week.

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
