I shared a video with my Leadership Masterclass yesterday. It was Marie Forleo interviewing Seth Godin about failure. He shared a story about playing the game Monopoly with his children to convey this brilliant metaphor.
We all know Monopoly can be fun, and I say, “can be,” because it’s all contingent upon our luck, right? Did we get some good rolls of the dice? How was our strategy at buying houses, railroads, and hotels? Did we avoid buying utilities? All of this matters and sometimes the stars don’t align and then, if you are me, the game is no longer fun! (Are you sensing sore loser here?)
Monopoly (and life) are a game we play, and only one of them is optional. Sometimes we don’t get a good roll of the dice, but it’s OK, keep playing! Don’t quit (actually quitting isn’t really an option because the game goes on regardless of whether or not we are playing, so we might as well play, right?) Today, I am encouraging you to come back to the game. It’s OK, I promise! I’m handing you the dice—give it a whirl! Maybe you’ll land on Boardwalk or Park Place, but it can only happen if you play.
Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
Beth
