“A lot of people give up just before they’re about to make it. You know, you never know when that next obstacle is going to be the last one.” ~ Chuck Norris
This is a visual that will help us all along in our journey, for sure. Would we all behave differently if we could see the whole obstacle course we call life? Of course we would! We behave very differently in a race when we know the finish line is near, right? Somehow the outright exhaustion passes and we find some inner strength that we didn’t even know we had to start a final sprint to the finish. Don’t you ever wonder where that hidden strength comes from? Me, too.
Our sympathetic nervous system (SNS) always wants to protect us, so whether we are running a 5K race or trying to find a better job, the SNS will insert itself with “fight or flight.” But, when all the obstacles are in front of us, we can choose “fight” over “flight,” because we know the end is near—the whole “course” has been revealed.
So how can we trick our SNS into thinking that is not the case? Maybe Chuck Norris, of all people, had the answer? What if we asked ourselves, “What if this obstacle is the last one?” What would I do differently if I was certain this was the last obstacle? What if I knew for sure, the finish line was just beyond this obstacle? What then? How would I behave differently? Let’s choose this thought today—let’s outsmart our own SNS. Don’t choose “flight” today, let the fighter in you carry on for one more obstacle.
Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
Beth
