Recently, I made an appointment with my doctor for an annual check up. We all do this, right? And ladies, we have a few extra appointments to make. Why do we do this? Why don’t we simply do a quick assessment ourselves? You know, like, “I’m feeling pretty good overall, so I must be good! Until next year…!”
We schedule our annual checkup because we want real, solid answers. We want someone to do a thorough assessment of all that is currently going on and we’re also looking for some answers as to what we might do differently going forward to optimize our health—like more Vitamin D or exercise more to lower our cholesterol. The goal is that once we know where we stand, we want to have equal or better health next year. Right?
July and August are often slower months for most people at home or at work. This is the perfect time for all of us to do our own annual check up—not for our health, we will leave that for the doctors—but for our personal or professional development. We don’t need a lot of time for this, but we should really carve out an hour or so to think and plan. If you’re hesitant, hire a coach—it’s one way to force yourself to make a plan, all the while capitalizing on the expertise of someone who does this for a living. The next year will be a completely different if we make a solid plan. Winging it or trudging along hoping all falls into place is not a plan, but it is our choice.
Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!

Performing a self-assessment periodically, especially for your career or ahead of a job search, is extremely important. There are many changes and disruptors in the marketplace that occur over time. That includes changes in tools you use, regulations, economic impacts, etc. While you are heads-down working, you may not be aware of those changes. Your self-assessment allows you the opportunity to understand the state of the professional marketplace. And, determine if your skills and experiences will be competitive in that market. With that understanding, you are better positioned to compete in your career advancement.
