Puzzle Pieces

I was down in Raleigh for the last few days visiting one of my dearest friends. She loves puzzles and games, which makes a visit with her even more fun. I helped her work on a 300-piece puzzle which, by the way, which was like asking an adult what 2+2 equals! She could do a 300-piece puzzle blindfolded—well, not really, but you get it.

Puzzles are fun, but they can also be really challenging, depending on the number of pieces as well as the picture. I started to think about the strategy of puzzles and how it’s so similar to life. Life is like doing a puzzle without the benefit of having the picture—without even knowing what the picture looks like at all! Sometimes there are a lot of attempts to make a puzzle piece fit, and it’s super frustrating when it doesn’t, but there’s nothing more satisfying then when it does. It’s a, “YES!” moment.

So if your struggling right now with work or home, maybe it would help to think of it like a puzzle. Maybe the struggle is that the “piece” simply doesn’t fit. Do we need to try another “piece,” that maybe we’ve been unwilling to consider? To continue to try to force this “piece” into the puzzle where it clearly doesn’t fit is ridiculous, right? That’s the same with life. Sometimes we have to say, “This isn’t the “piece.” It doesn’t mean it isn’t the way, maybe we simply need to try a different approach. Today, simply agree that the piece you are trying to make fit simply doesn’t. Let’s try another way, O.K.?
