Last night, Bryson Stott hit a grand slam for the Philadelphia Phillies in a key wildcard playoff game to help the Phillies beat the Miami Marlins and move on to ultimately play the Atlanta Braves. It was a pretty exciting night in Philadelphia (and Hoboken, for that matter).
After the game, a reporter was interviewing Stott about the grand slam, but also about his off-season preparation. Stott said something like, “I throw right, but I bat left, so I did a lot of left-handed work. I used my left hand for everything—I held my phone in my left hand, I ate with my left hand, I opened doors with my left hand…”. I loved the focus on “just one thing” to improve his game—and look, this young man is only 25 years old, so I can only imagine what greatness lies ahead for him.
If you could focus on one thing that you wanted to improve, what would it be? I doubt you’d choose “left-handed,” but there’s definitely something out there gnawing at you. Imagine what would happen if you made this thing a priority. Does it pertain to your job? Are you looking for a new job? Is it not work related at all? Look, neither of us is looking to hit a real grand slam, but maybe we are metaphorically. And we can only do that if we focus on improving—one thing. Focus on one thing.
Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
