Yesterday, while I was was walking the dogs, I saw the ferry docked at 14th street pier for yet another run back to Manhattan with all of its passengers. This particular ferry travels to only 3 places: Hoboken, Weehawken, and Midtown Manhattan—from 6:30 am to 9:30 pm, essentially every day. It does not deviate from this path, and that’s when I got to thinking.
As humans, we repeat a lot of what we do each day, and we’ve talked about this before. Some of this repetition isn’t bad at all. Actually some of it is amazing, like working out or waking up early. But as I watched the ferry depart the 14th street pier, I thought about when it’s not good for us. No one on that ferry should have expected anything but a trip to Midtown. No one should have wondered why they weren’t seeing The Statue of Liberty or Brooklyn. Hoboken, Weehawken, Midtown Manhattan—that’s it!
We wonder why we aren’t getting a new job, or getting promoted, or losing weight, or just being happy, yet we are acting exactly like the ferry, doing the same thing over and over again every day and wondering why we aren’t seeing The Statue of Liberty! This ferry is never going to see The Statue of Liberty, so if we want to see her, we are going to have to get own a different boat—right? We all knew that, but sometimes the visual is so helpful. A different boat. It’s time.
Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
