Let’s talk about Deion Sanders for a minute. I went to an event where he was speaking. He was one of 8 speakers that day and his time was more of a conversation. He was interviewed by Don Yaeger, the co-author of Sanders new book, Elevate and Dominate – 21 Ways to Win On and Off the Field. I went in with an open mind and left inspired by his many thoughts and, arguably, a fan!
Although his achievements are undeniably incredible, it was two things he said that made me really pay attention. If you know anything about Neon Deion, you know he’s confident—very confident–and he wants us to be confident, too! He said, “If I believe in you more than you believe in you, we have a problem!” Think about that for a second. And if, “But,” is about to come out of your mouth, don’t let it! He perfected the craft of believing in himself and he delivered. Some may view his confidence in a negative way, but why? Confidence is the KEY to success, without it success is absolutely impossible. So start chanting to yourself daily, “I believe!”
My absolute favorite story from Sanders was at the University of Colorado Boulder. He called all of his team members into the theater. He then brought in all the women who worked in the athletic facility and said, “I heard you young men have been disrespecting these women and I WILL NOT TOLERATE THIS BEHAVIOR!” He went on to share the love and reverence he has for his mom and how she worked so hard to raise him as a single parent.
And the funniest line from Sanders was this: “I have never drank, smoked, or used drugs, so if you’ve seen me do something stupid, I want you too know that was really me!” OK, confidence aside, no one’s perfect! Good to know.
Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
