Motivational Monday

Our vacation is over, sadly, although it was really nice to be away for two full weeks. In the home we rented there was a piece of artwork in the basement that expressed this thought: “Trust that the wind knows where it’s going.” Those words instantly spoke to me, although I didn’t really know why. The sentiment hit me in a few different ways, as it may be hitting you right now.

You and I don’t ever try to redirect the wind, do we? Of course not! It would be futile to do so, or to even think that we could. But we do try to “redirect” life—or at least I do. If it’s bad, I want it to be good. If it’s sad, I want it to be happy. If it’s tough, I want it to be easy. It’s human nature (I hope) to engage in this intentional redirecting, if I’m able. But what if we both simply “trusted the ‘wind’ to know where it’s going?”

I’m not suggesting that we sit on our hands and get tossed around in the storm without doing anything. But I do believe there is something beautiful about embracing the storm. There’s something in the storm we are supposed to learn. We can’t become a great sailor if we are always in calm seas. “Trust that the wind knows where it’s going.” If you are fighting the wind right now, maybe today is the day that you pause. Not fighting, if even for a minute, might be the break you need. Then ask yourself, “What I am supposed to learn from this?” Trust the wind…
