Baby Steps vs. No Steps

I was listening to a podcast yesterday as I walked home from an appointment in downtown Hoboken. This very successful women talked about making mistakes—and many at that. She explained that people had described her as, “fearless,” but she said that was absolutely not true. She has fear, but she moves forward anyway, taking very calculated and well thought out imperfect action, which has resulted in her fair share of mistakes—AND successes!

I believe that’s the playbook right there! It’s the imperfect action and the acceptance of the (more than likely) immanent mistake that outweighs the paralyzing fear. Take a moment now and ask yourself, “What am I NOT doing in my work, in my career, or in my life because I am afraid of making a mistake that will cost me? The truth is, it’s costing you right now. Not acting, and remaining “safe,” has a cost, too. Write your thought down on paper right now, please. I will do the same.

If you actually wrote it down, you have taken step #1 which is HUGE! Getting this thought out of your head and onto paper means you just made it real. Now ask yourself, “What well thought out imperfect action step could I take to move the needle on this?” Now go take that first step. You and I needed a little push today and so, here it is!

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
