“Grace means that all of your mistakes now serve a purpose instead of serving shame.” ~ Brené Brown
I know it’s not Friday, so why am I sharing a quote? I will be on a plane when “Friday’s Quote” is suppose to arrive in your inbox— I will be away for the next two weeks. When I read this quote I knew I had to share it with you because it’s SO good! And it’s not like Brené Brown ever disappoints!
Raise your hand if you have an inner critic that is unkind and spends a good portion of each day harshly judging you? It starts when you get up and has the stamina to stay with you until bedtime—good times, right? If I wanted to get beaten up daily, I would join a boxing league. And this bashing isn’t even coming from the outside world, it’s a home game!
I have a few thoughts on this. To get to Brown’s place of “grace,” I believe we need to begin to notice these thoughts as unhelpful, unkind, and often untrue. Let’s separate ourselves from these thoughts. Notice them but don’t own them as our thoughts—why would we be so mean to ourselves? Secondly, find the “purpose” of these thoughts. If your thought was, “You didn’t workout today! You’re lazy and undisciplined.” The purpose of that thought is really a reminder, “Hey, you missed a day. Is everything O.K.?” And the answer is, “Yes, I know. I am O.K., I was just tired. I’m taking a day off because my body was calling for rest.” And there’s the grace.
Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
