I am reading a great work-related book right now by Florence Shinn. Although it was written in 1925, it has some amazing old-school pearls of wisdom. Shinn writes, “There is an old saying that man only dares use his words for three purposes: to heal, bless, or prosper.”
Imagine that, only using our words to heal, to bless, or to help someone prosper? Can we do that? Can we bite our tongue when we want to use our words for other purposes like to gossip, ridicule, criticize, or simply to be unkind or hurtful? I believe it is a bigger challenge than we think.
On Sunday, I started making my daily intention just that: use my words to heal, to bless, or to prosper. What an incredibly fun experiment! Simply having that as my daily intention has made me so happy! I have not been 100% successful but trying to be made me feel a bit like Santa Claus—doling out kind words, like small gifts, when appropriate. At other times, consciously saying nothing. Both felt good. Do you want to give it a try? I highly recommend it. It’s a great way to engage with the world, but hey, start with your family!
With Gratitude,
Beth
