What Are You Tolerating?

Tuesday night, while I was washing my face before bed, I got something in my eye. I assumed it was from the scrub I had just used, which has happened before. I tried flushing my eye with water, but to no avail. The irritant remained no matter what I tried to do to remove it. Finally, I gave up and went to bed, only to find that shutting my eye was far worse than keeping it open. So there I was, sleepless, with eye pain somewhere beyond irritating but just before excruciating, and waiting for the sun to come up so I could see my opthalmologist.

By 9:30 am, I was in his office, gratefully relinquishing the care of my eye to him. After some fabulous eye-numbing eye drops that I so gratefully received, he began probing my eye. Quickly, on the end of a long Q-tips, he removed the tiniest black spec, and showed it to me. He said, “It doest look like much, but in your eye, that’s enormous!” Instantly, my eye felt 1000x times better. If there wasn’t a pandemic, I would have hugged him! I declared to him that he was my new best friend!

We all have irritants in our life. That “thing” that no matter what we do, we can’t seem to remove it. It keep us up at night and it makes life difficult. But is it still there because we have continued to tolerate it OR because we can’t remove it? That’s the question we need to ask ourselves today. If I could remove it, or make it better, how would I do it? Sometimes we tolerate things because we are strong, but we forget that removing them has been an option all along. Ask yourself, “Why am I still tolerating this?”

With Gratitude,
Beth
