“99% of leadership failures are failures of character.” ~ Norman Schwartzkopf

Do you know why most people leave their job? Most people leave because of their boss, not the job or the company. I have left my job because of my boss more than once. So to all the leaders out there, especially now with “The Great Resignation,” maybe it’s time to work less on building high performance teams and more on becoming great leaders.

“Leadership is a potent combination of strategy and character. But if you must be without one, be without strategy.” ~ Norman Schwartzkopf

What are the top 3-5 character traits you have committed to as a leader? Which ones are your non-negotiables? And how do you exude these traits daily? Most leaders don’t have any answers to these questions because they haven’t given them any thought.

Great leaders spend a lot of time thinking about these questions. They think about how one becomes a great leader because they know it’s work—a lot of work. Most leaders assume they will figure it all out as times goes on, or worse, they assume they already are great leaders because they were chosen for the role—but that’s rarely the case. As a leader, I can’t think of anything worse than someone leaving the company because of me. That’s the ultimate failure as a leader. We lead people, and if they are leaving, are we really leading at all?
