Doug passed along an article written by Morgan Housel, the author of The Psychology of Money. The article was titled “Keep It Going” and although it was about investing, I read it in a completely different way.
Essentially, Housel was talking about the training schedules of professional athletes. As you can imagine, they all put in the hours, but all hours were not created equal. When those hours were broken down, surprisingly, the majority of them were light intensity (88%). 6.4% were medium intensity, and only 4.8% were at a high intensity. I was definitely surprised to find that the majority of time for these athletes was spent NOT pushing themselves, but rather “cruising along at a leisurely pace.”
So it is longevity over intensity that wins. The body is less tortured and we are less likely to burnout, both physically and mentally. Should we be taking a lesson from these professional athletes? They make recovery an important part of their routine, as well, so they can repeat this day after day. We might not be professional athletes, but burning the candle at both ends isn’t a good plan for us either.
Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
