“I do not wish women to have power over men; but over themselves.” Mary Shelley
This quote is for everyone, not just women. Let’s put Shelley’s quote into perspective, as she was born in 1797 and died in 1851, so this was a rather edgy quote for a woman living in the 1800’s. Regardless of whether you are a man or a woman, I hope you’ll take this quote to heart, because it applies to you and me, equally.
Somewhere on our journey of ascending the corporate ladder, in an effort to be successful, wealthy, accomplished, etc., we sometimes forget that there has never been a need to have power over anyone—just ourselves. We might want to repeat that—there has NEVER been a need to have power over anyone—just ourselves. Mic drop.
When we feel the need to have power over someone else, it becomes a battle. Visualize arm wrestling for a minute—one person trying to overpower someone else. Now simply visualize one hand, your own hand. How simple is it to have power over just your own hand? The battle is gone. So is the struggle. Shelley, who began writing Frankenstein at the age of 18, by the way, had it all figured out. We don’t need to have power over anyone, just ourselves! Brilliant, Mary, brilliant! This makes life a heck of a lot easier. Thank you!
Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
