I found an old picture of my kids the other day and I forwarded it to the family in a group chat. One of them replied, “My teeth look gasssss!” I laughed out loud when I read that, but it instantly reminded me about leadership.
Look at any picture of yourself with other people and what do you see? Invariably, in a group shot, we will see everyone but focus on ourselves. We focus on the good and the bad. We rivet our sights on ourselves. It’s human nature—it’s one of our very basic survival tools. Now we need to apply that to leadership.
If most people look at a group picture and perseverate on themselves, what should be included in EVERY conversation we have as leaders? People don’t care about how this is going to effect the company as much as they care about how this is going to impact ME! Tie the “me” piece into all of your leadership talks, and by “me” I mean your team, and you will find yourself leading a lot more horses to water.
Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
Beth
P.S. If you are a parent, please use this at home with your kids as well.
