I spent the last four days in Scottsdale, Arizona at the United States Tennis Association National Championships. Our 40 and Over Women’s team won the Middle States title and were fortunate enough to attend this event with 17 others teams from around the country. It was a lot of fun and really good tennis was played.
My partner and I split our two matches—won one and lost one. The one we lost, which is still stuck in our craw, could have been won, but I think we beat ourselves before the match even started. They were very good, we saw this immediately, and I think we psyched ourselves right out of the match. The exact opposite thing happened in the match we won. It was a David and Goliath thing both days, except one day we saw ourselves as David and one day we did not. It matters what we think.
Now, let’s take a look at our every day lives. What are we talking ourselves out of? What do we see as such a David goal that we couldn’t possible overcome Goliath? What we think about everything matters! I wish I could go back to that match and change my mindset. I would look back to my bravest moment in life and remind myself that I have been brave before. I would also remind myself that David actually beat Goliath although the odds where stacked against him. It really matters what we think, and if we believe we can’t win, then we certainly won’t. And if we start a sentence with, “Realistically…,” then we’ve missed the opportunity to find the David within us.
Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
