Last night we watched both the Philadelphia Phillies versus the San Diego Padres and the New York Yankees versus the Houston Astros. Although neither of my teams earned a win last night, I got a lot of enjoyment out of watching the fans. Baseball fans aren’t nearly as invested as NFL football fans—who paint their faces and dress up in costume—but they are quite passionate.
I was amazed as I watched ordinary people screaming at the top of their lungs, waving a “terrible towel,” giving players the finger, and yes, pretending to rock a baby. There was no filter, no decorum, no tact; just absolute and utter bravado. Their raw feelings were instantly and emotionally acted upon, along with 50,000 of their “closest friends” and fellow fans.
As a coach, when I ask someone to step outside their comfort zone for any reason, I almost always get resistance. I hear things like, “I don’t know if I can do that.” Sometimes it’s as simple as emailing their boss, but their fear is so overwhelming that they almost can’t move forward. So as I watched how these 150,000 fans behaved for 3 hours, I realized something…if we can harness that passion for OUR OWN LIVES, the world would be our oyster! The passion is undoubtedly within us, we are simply using it for our team and not ourselves. I know it’s there, I saw it, and now I can’t let anyone off the hook.
Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
