Family First

Yesterday, I saw a post from a friend. His son recently landed an amazing new job. He wrote, “Proud Poppa alert,” and end with his signature, “Family first, always.” Good message, right?

Later that same day, I read an article in Inc. Magazine about maintaining work-life balance and they quoted Mark Randolph, co-founder of Netflix. Randolph stated, In fact, the thing I’m most proud of in my life is not the companies I started, it’s the fact that I was able to start them while staying married to the same woman; having my kids
grow up knowing me and (best as I can tell) liking me, and being able to spend time pursuing the other passions in my life.” Honestly, that may be a far bigger success than Netflix.

For over 30 years, Randolph has had a standing date on Tuesday night’s with his best friend (it’s his wife, btw). He leaves the building at 4:55 pm every Tuesday. If you have something to say to him or there is a crisis, it better be done by 5 pm or you better be able to articulate it while walking to the parking lot because he’s leaving. Who can say that? I know we aren’t the founders of Netflix, but do you put family first? Have you made a commitment to your family like you have to your work? Tom and Mark, thank you for the reminder. Family first, always!
