Motivational Monday!
Doug and I went for a long walk yesterday morning around Hoboken. As we were making our way home up one of the side streets, I saw this sad little garden. Now at first glance, it might be sad because it’s the dead of winter, nothing is really growing outside right now. Well, at least not in the northeast. But I would definitely call myself a gardener, so I have seen this kind of garden in the middle of July, the heart of the growing season. So of course, this garden made me think of you and me.
Gardening isn’t simple—ask anyone who has tried and failed. Was it too much water or not enough? Too much sun, or not enough? Gardening is a game and the game is about winning. It’s about proving that we can do it and succeed. The biggest tomato or the most beautiful rose is proof that we did the work and it paid off! But sometimes it doest work out that way. Bugs, weather, and time are the enemies we fight with the whole way.
These pots are a metaphor for all that we want to grow in 2023. Don’t be fooled by how sad they look right now, we are just getting started. But what I want us to think about is, are we really going to try and nurture each one of these in 2023, or should we focus on the ones we really want to grow? What is the most important “plant?” It will be a lot simpler if our garden is smaller. And some “plants” we have had for years and they simply aren’t growing—should we change the way we tend to this “plant?” The old plan didn’t work, so it’s probably not going to work this year either. And do you need some help with this garden? A coach or friend who will be honest with you? Today, take a few minutes to give your garden some serious thought and planning. It will pay off soon enough!
Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
