Crossing the Street

Yesterday, I was driving out of Hoboken to go dress shopping at the Short Hills Mall. Getting out of town was like playing one of the old-fashioned plastic slide puzzle—move this way so you can go that way kind of thing. I was “bobbing and weaving” through the side streets, many of which had stop signs for the cross roads, making my journey even slower.

At a few of the stop signs, I had to wait for pedestrians who were crossing. I marveled at their brazen demeanor. One woman, in particular, made me think. As I watched her defiantly march through the crosswalk, I wondered if she spent each day this confident and self-assured, or was it just the simple, everyday tasks, like navigating the streets of her hometown? We all have that confident side of us, it’s simply a matter of when and where we choose to use it.

So, back to the pedestrian (and us). Let’s look at her toolbox. She clearly knows how to be confident and self-assured in a crosswalk, so couldn’t she parlay these tools into other areas of her life? I know this sounds simple, but sometimes we need to remember that we have the tools we are most looking for, we simply haven’t used them in the scenario or situation we want it in. Instead of saying, “I wish I were more (_____) fill in the blank,” perhaps we should be asking ourselves, “Exactly when have I been (_____) fill in the blank?” There was a time you were that and more—of that, I am certain! Tap into it!

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
