People Skills

One of the topics we discussed yesterday at Princeton University was People Skills. I love talking about this because it’s so often overlooked. “People Skills” are overlooked because we chalk it up to our innate likability rather than a skillset that needs to be honed regularly and forever—or at least as long as we are dealing with people on a daily basis.

The 6 most common areas for improvement when it comes to People Skills are: disagreements, managing emotions, listening, patience, willingness to understand, and empathy. As you read this list, do any of these seem like areas where you could use some improvement? Me, too! If I had to pick just one, I think I would choose managing emotions. Which one would you choose?

If you, too, have overlooked People Skills, maybe today is the day to put it back on the radar. People Skills is not solely about your likability or how charismatic you are, although that can be a piece of it. You can also be a complete introvert and still have amazing people skills. Look back at the 6 most common areas for improvement and ask yourself, “How am I doing?”
