Me First

One of the speakers I listened to last week started his presentation with this blanket statement: “I don’t follow through for myself like I do for others.” Don’t miss this one, because it’s HUGE! We follow through for others for so many reasons, right? We want to be dependable, we want to be liked, we want to show our worth, we want to be needed, etc.

But what happens when we need to follow through for ourselves? We somehow quickly become less accountable because all of the feelings I mentioned above that we feel when we help others are nonexistent when we help ourselves. So helping others is actually an “ego” thing—it makes us feel good about ourselves. Helping ourselves, on the other hand, doesn’t trigger any of the same emotions, so we are not as compelled to do it. So how do we fix it?

For some of you, just knowing this information will be enough for you to change your habits. Showing up for yourself FIRST is really important. “First” may be causing some of you to get uncomfortable—especially the women, right? Myself, included. We’ve been taught to help and serve others. But today, I am asking all of you to start following through for yourself FIRST. No one in your world should ever want you to put yourself after them if they truly love you. If you don’t follow through for yourself, there is NO ONE that is going to remind you to do so! Make YOU a priority and imagine what will happen when you start to follow through for yourself like you do for others! Holy Smokes! It’s going to be INCREDIBLE!

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
